M is for Mania
There’s something in the air. Call it summer insanity or hot-weather hot-headedness but there is definitely something up. As the weather heats up and we schlep through the strange blend of working and not working, holidays and holiday cover, we all start to buzz like molecules reaching boiling point. I’ve been feeling it over the past few weeks as Paris empties out for August (controversially I love the empty city but that’s another story) and the more that the streets become bare, the higher the propensity for madness is.
Observations of mania from my notes:
A woman wearing Uggs in 38 degree heat.
Saw a boy eating chocolate crepes on the metro. The rolled ones which come in 6 packs in noisy plastic. Clearly on a family holiday as they all had big rucksacks. His mum was annoyed because he kept unrolling the crepes to reach the chocolate centre and dropping crepe everywhere. Family holiday mania.
Vietnamese place around the corner from my flat - someone eating a steaming hot bowl of noodle soup in the direct and blazing sunlight. Chairs in the shade were available.
Being unable to make plans with anyone as the scheduled summer jaunts overlap and collide.
A man swimming in his pants in the public outdoor pool. Manic and totally unacceptable.
Lazy signage denotes change in menu and hint of mania.
To repeat last edition's recommendation, The Bear is delightful mania. There is an edge of tension sharper than the knives they are stabbing each other with.
The current state of my bedroom.
Our barman refilling the olives three times in addition to the crisps and peanuts. Salty marketing or mania?
Mega manic portion sizing at Tawlet. This is a mania I won’t complain about but manic nonetheless. This is a starter.
It seems maniacal that I am inside my flat on a sunny Friday afternoon writing this newsletter, hence I will now sign off after this lazy listicle. Also manic to send a newsletter out at 18h44 on a Friday but hey ho, call it weekend reading.
